Meet the founder

Mike Scanlan

Technology founder · Operator · Advisor

Mike is a Boston-based technology founder and operator with more than two decades of experience turning complicated systems into practical business capability.

His path into fintech began with a problem he experienced personally: buying Bitcoin was far too difficult. His interest in encryption and cybersecurity, combined with that friction, led him to found CoinMover in 2017 and bring its first cash-to-crypto kiosks to market in 2018.

As CoinMover’s founder and chief technology officer, Mike helped take the business from concept to a multi-state, regulated financial-technology operator with more than $85 million in top-line revenue. He led technology strategy, platform development, security, regulatory controls, technical hiring, and the systems required to support rapid growth.

Before CoinMover, Mike spent more than 20 years in finance and healthcare information technology, including work with JPMorgan, Brown Brothers Harriman, and Tufts Health Plan. That combination—enterprise discipline, founder urgency, and direct operating accountability—now shapes how he leads BSTN engagements.

Mike has contributed cryptocurrency perspectives to Fast Company and has been profiled by The Boston Globe and Authority Magazine. A lifelong traveler, he has visited 59 of the 193 United Nations member countries and intends to reach them all.

Who we are

We have sat in the operator’s chair.

BSTN is led by practitioners who have designed infrastructure, built software and financial systems, scaled technical organizations, managed regulated operations, and made decisions when the stakes were real and the answers were not obvious.

That experience changes the work. We do not separate strategy from delivery or sell a polished plan that ignores operating reality. We get close to the business, make the hard decisions explicit, and work alongside the people responsible for the result.

Our headquarters at 56 Broad Street puts us in the center of the city. We serve clients across Greater Boston and New England, and work remotely with organizations throughout the United States.

What we believe

01

Technology is mostly operating discipline.

Most outages, breaches, and failed initiatives are ownership, documentation, decision, and change-management problems hiding inside technology.

02

Operators see what advisors miss.

Advice changes when it comes from people who have built systems, led teams, carried budgets, handled incidents, and answered for the outcome.

03

Boston matters.

Direct, practical, resilient, ambitious, and close enough to show up. Our local roots shape how we communicate and how we work.

04

A real handoff is a feature.

Clients own the systems, decisions, documentation, and knowledge. We build capability instead of creating dependency.
